Black History Month 2025

The Association for the Study of African American Life & History (ASALH) was established on September 9, 1915, by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Formerly known as the Negro Historical Association, ASALH created Black History Month. ASALH’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge about Black History. You can read more about ASALH here.

Each year, Black History Month is celebrated with a theme. This year’s theme is “African Americans and Labor”, focusing on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary intersect with the collective experiences of Black people.

You can view and/or download ASALH’s statement on this year’s theme at the link below.
